One of the questions I hear most in clinic is simple:
“How long before I actually see results?”
It makes sense. When you have been watching your hair thin over time, waiting months can feel frustrating. You want to know if it is worth it. You want some certainty.
From my experience offering PRP hair treatment in Belfast, the patients who feel happiest with their results are the ones who understand the timeline from the start. Not because PRP is slow for the sake of it, but because it follows your body’s natural pace.
So here is what the first six months usually look like. No exaggeration. Just what I see in practice.
Why PRP Takes Time
Hair does not grow in one continuous phase. Each strand follows its own cycle.
There are four key stages:
- Anagen, the active growth phase
- Catagen, a short transition
- Telogen, the resting phase
- Exogen, where shedding happens
When hair starts to thin, more follicles move into rest and shedding earlier than they should. Fewer remain in active growth.
PRP works by encouraging those quieter follicles to become active again. It also supports the ones already growing. But this shift is gradual. Follicles respond in their own time.
That is why PRP is a process, not a quick fix.
A Quick Look at the Treatment
PRP stands for platelet rich plasma.
I take a small blood sample, process it in a centrifuge, and isolate a layer rich in platelets and growth factors. This is then injected into areas where thinning is most noticeable.
These growth factors act as signals. They support blood flow, calm inflammation, and encourage healthier hair growth.
Because it comes from your own body, it works in a natural way. Nothing artificial. Nothing added.
What the First 6 Months Look Like
This is the part patients find most helpful. Here is how things usually progress.
Weeks 1 to 4: A Quiet Start
After your first session, the scalp may feel slightly tender. Some redness is normal. This settles within a day or two.
Then things go quiet.
This is often where doubts creep in. You may feel like nothing is happening. In reality, changes are taking place beneath the surface.
What you might notice:
- Very little at first
- Possibly a healthier scalp feel
- Maybe slightly less shedding towards the end of the month
What I advise:
Stay patient. Attend your next session. Avoid judging results too early.
Weeks 4 to 8: Early Signals
By your second or third session, small changes begin.
The first real sign is often reduced shedding. Fewer hairs in the shower. Less in your brush. It is subtle, but important.
Some patients also mention that their scalp feels calmer or less irritated.
What you might notice:
- Reduced daily shedding
- Improved scalp comfort
What I advise:
Stick with the plan. Take photos for comparison. Trust the process.
Months 2 to 3: A Temporary Dip
This stage can catch people off guard, so I always explain it early.
Some patients experience a short phase of increased shedding. This is part of the cycle resetting. Weaker hairs make way for stronger ones.
It does not happen to everyone, but when it does, it is usually brief.
What you might notice:
- A short increase in shedding
- Then a steady improvement
What I advise:
Do not panic. Do not stop treatment. Reach out if you are unsure.
Months 3 to 4: Early Regrowth
This is where visible change begins.
Most patients start to see:
- Fine new hairs along the hairline or parting
- Hair feeling thicker at the root
- Slightly less scalp visibility
It is often subtle, but it is real progress.
What you might notice:
- Early regrowth
- Better texture
- A general sense that your hair is improving
What I advise:
Continue your sessions. Take updated photos. Consider future maintenance.
Months 4 to 6: Clear Improvement
Between months four and six, results become more noticeable.
At this stage, patients often report:
- Fuller looking hair
- Better density at the parting
- Hair that styles more easily
- More confidence in photos
This is when I usually review progress and plan maintenance.
What you might notice:
- Visible improvement in thickness and quality
What I advise:
Discuss a maintenance plan. Support your hair with good general health.
Why Expectations Matter
PRP rewards patience.
If you expect instant change, it can feel disappointing early on. If you understand the timeline, the results tend to feel much more satisfying.
This is a medical treatment. It works with your biology. And that means results appear steadily, not all at once.
Why Medical Oversight Is Important
PRP involves blood handling and precise injection into the scalp. It should always be carried out in a clinical setting.
With over 15 years in private practice, a Master’s Degree in Aesthetic Medicine, and membership of the Aesthetic Complications Expert Group, my approach is centred on safety and accuracy.
My dental background also gives me a detailed understanding of anatomy, which is important when working in this area.
Every patient receives a full consultation and personalised plan. PRP is not suitable for everyone, and I will always be honest about that.
Booking a Consultation
If you have noticed changes in your hair and are considering PRP hair treatment in Belfast, I am happy to talk it through with you.
The first step is always a detailed consultation. We look at what is happening, what may be causing it, and whether PRP is the right option.
There is no pressure to proceed.
PRP hair treatment is a medical procedure and is not suitable for everyone. A full consultation is required before treatment. Results vary between individuals, and timelines are a guide rather than a guarantee. As with any injectable treatment, there are risks and side effects, which will be discussed in detail during consultation. This content is for general information and reflects my clinical experience. It does not replace personalised medical advice.
