Dermal fillers are becoming a sought-after cosmetic solution for individuals aiming to attain a youthful and smooth complexion, especially with the growing interest in dermal fillers in Belfast.

This specialised treatment is crafted to reduce the prominence of fine lines and wrinkles, effectively battling the noticeable indicators of ageing.

From the initial consultation to the final results, I am committed to provide you with the insights and expertise to make an informed decision about enhancing your natural beauty.

What are dermal fillers?

Dermal fillers consist of tiny injections containing hyaluronic acid. These injections are designed to augment the soft tissue by adding volume, thereby correcting various skin imperfections.

When administered into the dermis layer of the skin, dermal fillers have the ability to smooth out wrinkles, creases, and folds on various facial areas, including around the eyes, cheeks, mouth, and jawline. They act as a filler, providing a fuller and more youthful appearance to the treated areas.

Additionally, dermal fillers can be directly injected into the lip tissue. This specialised application serves to plump the lips, enhancing their natural shape and volume, and contributing to a more appealing and balanced facial aesthetic.

Are there various kinds of dermal fillers?

Indeed, there are primarily two main categories of dermal fillers, each offering distinct advantages and being particularly suited to specific skin types.

  • Hyaluronic Acid Fillers: This is a substance naturally present in parts of the body such as the eyes, joints, and skin. With the remarkable ability to retain up to 1000 times its weight in water, Hyaluronic acid facial fillers are designed to volumise, shape, and moisturise the skin, giving it a plump and youthful appearance.

  • Non-hyaluronic acid dermal fillers: these fillers are polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA), poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA), calcium hydroxyapatite (CaHA) and have the ability to stimulate collagen production. Unfortunately they don’t have the reversibility of hyaluronic acid dermal fillers.

Both types of fillers have their own applications and benefits, and a consultation with a skilled medical injector such as myself can help determine the best choice for your individual needs and desired outcomes.

How do dermal fillers function?

The facial ageing process is characterised by loss of collagen, facial volume and descent of the tissues. Beginning around the age of 25, the levels of collagen and elastin, essential proteins that maintain youthful skin, begin to decrease. This reduction leads to a loss of volume, contributing to an aged appearance.

Dermal fillers, composed of naturally-derived acids, are introduced into the skin using fine needles. Their primary function is to add fullness and elevate the skin’s surface.

By doing so, they compensate for the natural hyaluronic acid, collagen and elastin that is no longer produced due to ageing. This restoration process revitalises the skin, rendering it more robust, youthful, and invigorated, effectively turning back the hands of time on your complexion.

How long is the duration of dermal fillers’ effects?

The longevity of dermal fillers typically ranges from 6 to 12 months, contingent on individual body response and the specific type of filler utilised.

Once the preferred appearance is attained, it’s commonly recommended to schedule periodic top-up treatments to preserve the desired look.

In the case of Hyaluronic acid fillers, the body naturally metabolises them over a span of approximately six months. Consequently, the effects gradually diminish without any enduring risks, allowing for a natural transition back to the original state of the skin or the opportunity for continued maintenance through additional treatments.

Is there a distinction between Botox and dermal fillers?

Indeed, there is a significant difference between Botox and dermal fillers, both in their composition and their function.

Dermal fillers are substances injected beneath wrinkles and lines to add volume and smoothness, creating a youthful appearance. They work by filling in the areas that have lost volume over time, giving the skin a plump and rejuvenated look.

Botox, on the other hand, operates by temporarily paralysing small muscles in the targeted areas. By inhibiting these muscles from making the movements that lead to wrinkles, Botox effectively prevents the formation of new lines and softens existing ones.

While both treatments aim to enhance the appearance of the skin, they do so through different mechanisms, and their applications and results can vary.

Will specialised aftercare be necessary following dermal fillers treatment?

Yes, post-treatment care is essential for anyone who undergoes dermal fillers in Belfast to ensure optimal results and minimise potential complications. Here’s a guideline for what to avoid following the procedure:

  • Makeup and Cosmetic Products: Refrain from applying these for at least 12 hours to allow the treated area to heal.

  • Alcohol, Aspirin, and Ibuprofen: Avoid these substances for 24 hours to reduce the risk of swelling and bruising.

  • UV Light, Sunlight, Saunas & Steam Rooms: Stay away from these for 48 hours to prevent irritation and potential discolouration.

  • Dental Work or Teeth Whitening: Postpone these procedures for at least 7 days to avoid undue pressure on the treated area.

  • Rubbing or Massaging the Treated Area: Avoid this for 14 days, as it may cause uneven distribution of the filler.

  • Extremely Strenuous Physical Exercise and Activities: Limit these for 48 hours to minimise swelling and promote healing.

Adhering to these guidelines will help ensure that the dermal fillers settle properly and that your skin heals smoothly.

Areas That Can Be Enhanced with Dermal Fillers

  • Nasolabial Folds: The lines running from the nose to the mouth, often deepening with age.

  • Marionette Lines: These are found on either side of the mouth and can give a downturned appearance.

  • Smokers/Lipstick Lines: Fine lines that appear around the mouth, often associated with ageing or smoking.

  • Lip Enhancement: Whether adding volume and shape or restoring hydration lost with age, fillers can rejuvenate the lips.

  • Chin Reshaping: Fillers can define, shape, and adjust the chin’s profile for a balanced facial appearance.

  • Nose Refinement: Achieve a smoother, straighter, or lifted nose profile without surgery.

  • Under Eye Hollows/Tear Trough: Addressing these areas can reduce the appearance of fatigue and ageing, often deepened by age-related fat loss.

  • Cheek Augmentation: Subtle beautification or plumping areas where fat loss has occurred can restore youthful fullness.

  • Jawline Definition: Fillers can sharpen the jaw angle and soften the appearance of jowls, creating a more defined look.

  • Smile Lines: Softening the lines that crinkle on the lower face as we age, for a more youthful and joyful expression.
